Type Design Week, București este un workshop intensiv de 5 zile, organizat de CMFC și susținut de renumitul Fred Smeijers, designer olandez de tip de literă. Eveniment găzduit de Universitatea Națională de Arte, secția Design Grafic, în perioada 15 – 19 Aprilie 2019.

The Type Design Week in Bucharest is a 5-day intensive workshop hosted by CMFC, lead by the renowned Dutch type designer Fred Smeijers. It will be held at The National University of Arts, Graphic Design Department in Bucharest from the 15th to 19th of April 2019.

Scopul workshopului:

– Înțelegerea aprofundată a alfabetului latin și construirea literelor;
– Dobândirea de cunoștințe prin exerciții practice pas cu pas, completate de cursuri teoretice și demonstrații susținute de Smeijers;

Workshop-ul se adresează:

– Studenților de la Design Grafic interesați de forma literelor, tip de literă și typography;
– Studenților din alte domenii ale artei sau arhitecturii, interesați de calitatea vizuală și necesitățile cuvântului scris;
– Profesioniști din domeniu ce doresc o cunoaștere mai largă a literelor;

Deși programul va conține o parte teoretică, e bine de știut că în mare parte, workshopul presupune exerciții practice și un ritm constant, nefiind recomandată ratarea unei zile (sau după-amiezi).
Programul zilnic va fi de 7 ore de curs, o oră pauză de masă și 2 pauze de 15 minute pentru cafea.
Workshopul va fi ținut exclusiv în limba engleză. (Studenții trebuie să aibă o înțelegere bună a limbii engleze pentru a putea participa).

Metoda de predare

Metoda  Type Design Week a fost dezvoltată și practicată de Fred Smeijers de-a lungul a 30 de ani de experiență academică și pedagogică. Metoda se bazează pe folosirea literelor stencil și este foarte eficientă în a livra o introducere corectă în forma literelor și relațiile vizuale dintre ele.
Metoda pleacă de la prezumția că a lucra cu mâinile poate asigura o satisfacție autentică ceea ce rezultă într-un interes și entuziasm crescut.
Cursurile teoretice, exercițiile și sesiunile de feedback vor face ca înțelegerea, controlul și precizia să se dezvolte în paralel.
Materialele folosite sunt simple, ușor de manipulat și ieftine. Nu sunt necesare aptitudini sau experiență în plus, dobândite în timp îndelungat. Nu se va folosi deloc calculatorul.

Căutăm studenți și profesioniști în domeniul designului sau artelor grafice, designului de tip de literă, typography, cu pasiune pentru litere. Natura cursului permite participarea cursanților din diverse domenii de activitate, de la începători la cei mai experimentați în domeniu, care doresc aprofundarea în designul de tip de literă și dobândirea aptitudinilor practice, pe lângă a învăța modul de a studia și crea un tip de literă într-un mod neconvențional.

Pentru a aplica tot ce trebuie să faci este să trimiți un CV și un portofoliu scurt, în format PDF (nu mai mult de 5 lucrări, mărime maximă de 5 MB), până pe data de 25 Martie 2019.

The Type Design Week in Bucharest is a 5-day intensive workshop hosted by CMFC, lead by the renowned Dutch type designer Fred Smeijers. It will be held at The National University of Arts, Graphic Design Department from the 15th to 19th of April 2019.

The goal of this workshop is:

– to gain a rich understanding of the Latin alphabet and building elements of letters

– to transfer this insight into actual knowledge and skills with help of step-by-step practical exercises, supported by lectures and on-the-spot demonstrations by Smeijers himself.

The workshop is suitable for:

– Graphic Design students with a keen interest in letter-shapes, type, and typography

– Students from other art fields and architecture, who are interested in the visual quality and requirements of the visible word

– Professionals in the field, who feel the need for a broader fundament and understanding of letters
Although the workshop program will feature a number of lectures and demonstrations by Smeijers, it should be understood that the program largely consists of hands-on exercises. Attendees have to follow the exercises in a steady pace, in which one is not advised to miss a day (or afternoon).
The workshop daily program will run during 7 working hours, excluding 1 hour for lunch and two 15-minute coffee breaks.
The workshop will be held in English. (Students must command a good understanding of the English language in order to be able to follow the lectures and demonstrations )

Teaching method

The Type Design Week program is a teaching method developed and practiced by Fred Smeijers during his 30 years of academic and teaching experience. The method is based on the use of stencil letterforms and is very effective in delivering a proper introduction into letter-shapes and the visual relation between them.
The method is based on the assumption that doing things by hand can deliver true personal satisfaction, which results in a bigger interest and intense enthusiasm.
The lectures, exercises and feedback sessions will ensure that understanding, control, and precision will develop hand in hand.
The materials used during the program are plain, easy to handle and not costly. There is no need for extra experience or skills gained over long periods of time. No computer work is involved.
We are looking for students and professionals in the fields of graphic arts & design, typographic, and typeface design with a passion for type. The nature of the course allows for various backgrounds, from beginners to seasoned practitioners, who will immerse into the world of type and acquire new practical skills, as well as learning to look at and design type in unconventional ways.

The applicants’ selection will be made by Fred Smeijers and event organisers.

Fred Smeijers e designer de literă, profesor, cercetător și scriitor olandez. A studiat la Școala de Artă din Arnhem, a fost consultant tipografic la compania reprografică Océ, apoi a devenit membru fondator al grupului de design grafic Quadraat, ce a produs și numele primului lui tip de literă (FontFont, 1992). Printre cei mai versatili designeri de tip de literă contemporani , Smeijers deține o gamă variată de tipuri de literă: Renard (TEFF); Nobel (DTL); Arnhem, Fresco, Sansa, Custodia, Ludwig și Puncho, publicat prima dată de OurType, brand-ul pe care l-a co-fondat și condus până în 2017. Printre proiectele sale speciale se numără tipuri de literă dedicate și lettering pentru Philips Electronics, Canon-Europe, Tom-Tom, Samsung și Porsche.

Prima sa carte, Counterpunch a fost publicată de Hyphen Press în 1996, reeditată în 2011 și tradusă în franceză, japoneză și portugheză. În 2001 a primit premiul Gerrit Noordzij pentru contribuția deosebită adusă designului de literă, alături de o carte despre munca sa – Type Now (Hyphen Press, 2003). În 2016, Societatea pasionaților de tipografie i-a acordat premiul lui Fred.

Este cercetător la Platin Museum în Antwerp , profesor de design de literă la Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst în Leipzig, și profesor colaborator la Academia Regală de Arte din Haga și Universitatea din Reading, UK.

Fred Smeijers is a Dutch type designer, educator, researcher, and writer. Among the most versatile contemporary type designers, Smeijers has a whole range of distinctive typefaces to his credit, among which are: FF Quadraat; TEFF Renard; DTL Nobel; Arnhem, Fresco, Sansa, Custodia, Ludwig, Puncho, and Bery series. Smeijers custom type designs include iconic logos and typefaces for Philips Electronics, Tom-Tom, Canon-Europe, Samsung, and Porsche, among many others.

Smeijers is the recipient of Gerrit Noordzij Award for outstanding contribution to the field of type design and type education (The Hague, 2001), and the recipient of the SOTA Typography Award from Society of Typographic Aficionados (Boston, 2016). Smeijers is the author of Counterpunch (1996, 2011) and Type Now (2003) both published by Hyphen Press, London.

Fred Smeijers was formerly a founding partner and Creative Director of the font publishing label OurType (2004–2017). Smeijers is Professor of type design at the HGB in Leipzig, Germany and the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague, and a research fellow at Plantin Museum in Antwerp, Belgium.
